With rookie manager Ryan Mason leading The Hawthorns, West Brom has had a respectable start to the season despite a hectic summer filled with numerous changes at the club.

The Baggies have fallen from the top six and the play-off spots in recent weeks due to a lack of goals, and their possession-dominant style is becoming fairly easy for teams to play against and nullify. Nevertheless, Albion supporters have some hope that they will be able to put together a run of form that sees them launch a promotion challenge in the second half of the season, but they need an extra spark or two in the final third of the pitch, and Brentford’s Fabio Carvalho could and should be the man to provide it.

Tom Fellows, a winger for West Brom, had more assists in the Championship last season than any other player, despite playing for a team that ultimately failed to place in the top six. Fellows had a strong start to the season as well, but before the summer transfer window closed, the England U21 international was sold to Southampton, giving West Brom little time to find a successor. Although Samuel Iling-Junior was signed on loan from Aston Villa, he is undoubtedly a very different kind of player from Fellows and lacks effectiveness and efficiency in crucial situations.

Although Fabio Carvalho can play off both sides, he primarily plays in the so-called “number ten.” However, if Albion retains Northern Ireland international Isaac Price, who is having an outstanding season, that spot won’t be up for grabs. That’s okay, though, because West Brom needs better talent on the flanks and someone who, like Fellows, can consistently supply from out-wide while still possessing the technical skills to be more than simply a wide player who gets chalk on their boots.

Additionally, Carvalho would provide subtlety to West Brom’s attack, adding even more accuracy to a style that is frequently laborious. He would also be sharp in tight spaces against low blocks, which are frustrating Albion this season. After graduating from Fulham’s academy, Fabio Carvalho started to establish himself for the Cottagers during the 2021–2022 campaign, which saw Fulham win the Championship with 90 points and 106 goals. Carvalho, a former England and Portugal youth international who scored 10 goals in 36 league games that season, was largely responsible for Fulham’s outstanding performance in the second division.

After that, he moved to Liverpool, where he made 21 appearances overall but struggled to make a significant impact. He also experienced this in the Bundesliga when on loan at RB Leipzig. Under the direction of Liam Rosenior, who is eager to play similarly to Mason, Carvalho returned to the Championship at Hull City on loan for the latter part of the 2023–2024 season and started to flourish once more, scoring nine goals in 20 games for a mediocre Tigers team.

Once more, his move to Brentford has not gone well, and Florian Plettenberg’s reports indicate that he will undoubtedly depart the Bees in January, with a permanent move even being contemplated. Albion would probably lose out on that, but if another loan move was approved, West Bron would be the best destination since Carvalho would become a vital member of a squad aiming to make it to the top six, reviving his career once more.
