What did we learn from McInnes’ first Hearts game?
“I enjoyed it, but I want to enjoy it a wee bit more.” Derek McInnes managed a small smile at the end of his successful first game as Hearts’ head coach.
The scoreboard indicated a comfortable 4-1 victory in the Premier Sports Cup, but scoreboards do not often tell the whole tale. McInnes sat in the dugout for much of the steamy second half of Hearts’ match against Dunfermline Athletic.
He must have believed all his wishes had come true when James Wilson put Hearts ahead with three minutes left on the clock, much to the pleasure of a noisy home crowd, but it was not a perfect portent of things to come.
Despite a quick start, Hearts played it cautious and lacked the killer instinct to finish the game before the interval.
Instead, they approached the situation calmly. A draw after 90 minutes appeared probable until Lawrence Shankland, whom McInnes helped keep at Tynecastle, converted two identical penalties in under three minutes.
With little over ten minutes remaining, the points were secured, but replacement Stephen Kingsley’s spectacular finish in stoppage time provided a sigh of relief.
