What Does the Midfield Player Bring to Sheffield United; Sheffield United Makes a Statement Signing?
Djibril Soumare, a midfielder for Braga, has officially joined Sheffield United on a season-long loan with a buyout clause if the team is promoted back to the Premier League the following year.
Arriving at Bramall Lane after spending the previous season on loan at Nacional in Portugal, the 22-year-old Senegalese midfielder made 23 appearances in the Primeira Liga, recording one goal and one assist. Vincius Souza, who just completed a move to Bundesliga team VfL Wolfsburg, is thought to be a like-for-like replacement for Soumare, who is known for his toughness and ball-winning skills in the base of midfield.
Djibril Soumare on Continuing Sheffield United’s Legacy of Iliman Ndiaye
“I am thrilled to be here; it is a real honor to sign for Sheffield United, and I’m really excited to come to England and test myself in English football,” Soumare told the club’s media upon his arrival in South Yorkshire. Although I’ve had some positive experiences playing in Portugal, this was a fantastic opportunity for me, and when I initially learned of United’s interest, it quickly drew my attention.
“I was born in Senegal, and Sheffield United is a club which is well known back home because of the impact of Iliman Ndiaye,” the midfielder added, referring to a former Blades fan favorite who influenced numerous young Senegalese basketball players. It is great for me to be able to follow in his shoes because he has established the benchmark here.
Soumare’s Contributions to the Blades
The Blades have had few senior alternatives in center midfield during preseason play since Souza’s departure. Callum O’Hare, a naturally attacking midfielder, frequently fills in on the right side of a midfield three. The only recognized central midfielders now available are Sydie Peck and Gustavo Hamer.
That area is addressed by Soumare’s arrival. In addition to providing steel to the midfield with his powerful tackling and tactical knowledge, his ability to dribble and maintain cool under pressure gives United a transitional outlet. He also gives Ruben Selles’ team much-needed balance and physical presence because he is 6’1″ and naturally left-footed.
Because transitions are frequently crucial in the Championship, Soumare’s ability to carry the ball into midfield and support counterattacks may prove to be a valuable asset.
Sheffield United made a very wise acquisition that might result in a long-term contract if Selles gets promoted this season. Even those at Braga agreed that the 22-year-old has a high ceiling. Unfortunately, due to a shift in strategy and the need to free up cash and a squad spot, he had to go on loan to Nacional last season, where he once again made an impression. Additionally, he hopes to demonstrate to the English supporters his skill level at Bramall Lane.
