What is El Niño and how could it affect weather in Sussex?

Experts warn that a unique meteorological phenomena may cause heatwaves throughout the county.

The’super El Niño’ is expected to increase temperatures, leading to unpredictable weather patterns.

A Met Office spokeswoman stated, “There is strong confidence that El Nino will form later this year.

The phenomena is distinguished by warmer surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific, which alter global weather patterns.

It occurs when temperatures rise by at least 0.5 degrees Celsius above normal in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific.

The Met Office acknowledges that the effects of El Niño on European weather are difficult to predict, but emphasises that the influence does not increase with the magnitude of the event.

“This is just one of several climate drivers that can affect the UK, so we’ll have to weigh the competing factors later,” a Met Office spokesman said.

El Niño is named after the Spanish phrase “El Niño de Navidad,” which means “the Christ Child,” as Peruvian fishermen first observed it around Christmas.
