Djibril Soumare is reportedly nearing a permanent move to the Blades, which would be finalized if Ruben Selles’ team is promoted back to the Premier League.
However, which Senegal Under-21 player is being linked to a move to Bramall Lane?
After playing for Senegalese team Sahel Atlantic FC as a young player, the 22-year-old defensive midfielder attracted the attention of Portuguese team Braga. In the 2021–2022 season, he went on loan to Braga U-19s and advanced through the levels.
He signed a four-year contract with Braga in the Primeira Liga in June 2022, however he was initially allocated to their B club. After being promoted to the senior squad the following year, Soumare made his debut in the Taca de Portugal (Portuguese cup competition) in October 2023, defeating Rebordosa 2-0.
In January 2024, Braga won the competition, and Soumare was a member of the team when he raised his senior career’s first trophy.
In order to obtain more top-flight experience, Soumare’s contract was extended last season, and he was loaned to Nacional, where he made 23 league games, recording one goal and one assist.
Soumare’s potential contributions to the Blades team
After Vinicius Souza departed Sheffield United to join Wolfsburg of the Bundesliga, the 6’1 Braga youth product might provide a presence in the midfield.
With his expertise in the top division, Soumare can benefit Selles’ team as they aim to return to the Premier League. Additionally, he still has a lot of opportunity to grow at just 22, so if he succeeds at S2, it would be better for everyone if his transfer were permanent rather than United developing a player for another team.
After being called up for a series of qualifying matches for the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations in 2022, Soumare has made four appearances at the U23 level for his native Senegal.
