Why are traffic lights on Dundee’s Swallow Roundabout turned off?

The junction has reverted to a give-way system whilst work is being done to update the lane markings and signs.
The traffic lights at Dundee’s Swallow Roundabout are turned off. The junction has reverted to a give-way system as “remedial works” are being completed.
This includes replacing the roundabout’s lane markings and signs after a safety audit labelled the former configuration as “confusing”.
Springfield Properties, which has been handling the Swallow Roundabout project as part of its Western Gateway development, said the traffic signals will remain turned off until the work is completed.

Drivers ‘confused’ as traffic lights turned off at Dundee’s Swallow Roundabout

The company has also erected temporary traffic lights to provide pedestrian access across the A90.

However, Springfield claims that this has produced further “confusion” for drivers, and that additional efforts are required to clarify the current system.

An update stated: As you are aware, remedial work is being carried out at the Swallow Roundabout.

“While the work is being done Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., the traffic lights must also be turned off during the day.

“This signifies that the roundabout has returned to a give-way system. “Because there is now pedestrian access across the A90, temporary traffic lights have been installed here to ensure a safe pedestrian crossing.” “The Roads Authority and the Contractor agreed to these steps.

“Following allegations of confusion, the works’ appointed contractor, the Traffic Management company, and Police Scotland reviewed these procedures.

“They have confirmed that returning to a give way system is the most practical option while the corrective work is being carried out.

“Removing the pedestrian lights isn’t an option.

“To avoid traffic confusion, extra give way signs are being put today on the A90 approaches to the roundabout to make it plain to drivers that they must yield.

“The works will continue next week with Dykes of Grey Road and Riverside Avenue closing between 7pm and 7am.” The traffic lights at Dundee’s Swallow Roundabout were turned on for the first time in March, following months of repairs.

The Courier has investigated why lights are required at the intersection, as well as how concerns were expressed more than a decade before their installation.
