Why Lee Grant may be having the last laugh over Kevin Nagle at Huddersfield Town right now.
Lee Grant was taken aback by Huddersfield Town’s decision to fire him in January, and he has yet to accept the reality.
The Terriers position was his first in management after leaving the coaching staff at Ipswich Town in the summer, and what appeared to be a brilliant decision by all sides swiftly turned into a nightmare when the West Yorkshire club failed to secure automatic promotion.
While they are obviously not mathematically out of the running just yet, those at the Accu Stadium would need a miracle to close the gap to the top two and finish in those automatic spots at the end of this season, with their path to promotion now looking like it will have to go through the play-offs – if they are to even remain in the top six.
However, Huddersfield are currently dealing with consistency, which Grant has to deal with on his own.
However, he may have the final laugh if his previous side’s issues continue, and his successor fails to get the best out of the team.
Liam Manning has failed to get Huddersfield Town going since his arrival
Despite having had a very brief managing career, Liam Manning has repeatedly found himself at the top of the table with Bristol City, MK Dons, and Oxford United.
However, there is no disputing that his tenure in HD1 has not been as successful as he would have liked, having won only four of his eight league games in charge.
He has only drawn once and lost the other three games, allowing those below him in the League One table to bridge the gap.
Given the time of year, Manning and Huddersfield do not need this, as Reading, Stevenage, and Wycombe Wanderers have all found decent form when it counts.
There are little over ten games remaining for each squad in the third division, and pressure is mounting on the team now in sixth place.
The Terriers have won just one of their previous five games, and with the Royals only a point behind them, this is becoming a major issue for their coach.
Lee Grant may feel vindicated amid his disappointment at leaving Huddersfield Town
Kevin Nagle’s decision to cut ways with Grant is already beginning to look bad, with Manning suffering from many of the same challenges that Huddersfield were already dealing with, and it appears at this stage that these concerns extend beyond the person in the dugout.
Their former boss took to LinkedIn on Sunday to express his disappointment in being fired, writing:
“As managers, we understand that the landscape in which we operate can be harsh. It’s definitely all-consuming. At the same time, it provides enormous fulfilment and joy.
I enjoyed every moment and aspect of my stint as Manager of Huddersfield Town AFC.” Obviously, I’ve had a full range of emotions over the last two weeks. It is critical to acknowledge the outstanding work that has occurred and is happening. Yes, we were in the top six league standings (10 points behind Automatic).
Yes, we were the leading scorers in League One. Yes, we topped the set piece chart. Yes, we were in the quarterfinals of the Football League Trophy.
“Ranked third in the contest for the most clean sheets. Proven player development (Castledine sold for £1 million or more, Ashia, Radulovic, and others), debuts for Ashia, Vost, Sway, and Mrisho, and cup victories over Premier League and Championship opponents.
Despite all of the effort and several indicators pointing in the correct direction, it was insufficient.
It’s time to reflect. It is now time to apply what we have learned.Grant won 11 of Huddersfield’s 27 league games, which was worse than Manning’s current win percentage.
However, he had the squad in a much more stable position than the Terriers’ current manager does, and he may have earned more time.
Nonetheless, the 40-year-old now has the option to find a new club and prove to Nagle that he would regret sacking him in the future.
