90 minute delays on the M1 near Luton due to overturned lorry.
Drivers are being warned of lengthy delays on the M1 northbound due to an overturned HGV and a 350-litre diesel spill.
Three of the four northbound lanes on the M1 are closed between 10 Pepperstock Interchange (Luton (S), Luton Airport A1081) and J11 Leagrave Interchange (Luton, Dunstable A505).
National Highways is on the scene, as are specialist recovery and maintenance contractors.
The HGV was fully loaded, and the load must be removed before it can be safely righted and recovered.
National Highways stated, “This is a slow process, but the recovery contractors are working as quickly as they can.” Once the HGV has been righted and recovered, the three lanes will need to be fully resurfaced.
Currently, there are approximately 90-minute delays and nine miles of congestion.
According to Traffic England, the road should be clear between 3.45pm and 4pm.National Highways advises people to reroute or delay their journey, or to allow extra time if travel is necessary.
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as new information becomes available.
