Yorkshire retro: 38 nostalgic photos capture 50s and 60s life, including shops, pubs and cars you may remember.
There was no internet, video games were in their early stages, and many homes lacked modern-day necessities such as central heating and refrigerators.
A much has changed since these photos of life in Yorkshire were taken in the 1950s and 1960s.
If you grew up back then, this retro photo gallery will undoubtedly bring back memories of what life was like more than a half-century ago. It shows typical individuals at work, school, and social gatherings, as well as the automobiles and clothes we wore.
These nostalgic photographs transport you back to a time when a computer took up an entire room, the buzz of electric milk floats was part of the morning symphony, and TVs were mended rather than discarded.
They depict the last days of the old trolley buses, workers on the factory floor, and washing lines stretching across the street between the ancient back-to-back houses that were previously common.
Lost taverns, breweries, and businesses, including C&A, British Home Stores, and Woolworths, are all depicted, as are bathers enjoying a dip in popular swimming pools and lidos at the period.
Some of the biggest stars of the day are also seen visiting Yorkshire, from film star Jayne Mansfield performing in a prison to John, Paul, George, and Ringo bringing Beatlemania to a tiny theatre.
Only those of a certain age will remember TV sensation ‘Wee Willie’ Harris, who drew crowds when he appeared to deliver an award.
Perhaps these photographs will make you nostalgic for a bygone period, or maybe you’re too attached to today’s gadgets to wish to go back in time.
