Coventry City handed double boost ahead of Derby County clash

Coventry City handed double boost ahead of Derby County clash.

Coventry City are still at the top of the Championship table as the season comes to a close.

With none of the three teams directly below the Sky Blues winning on Saturday afternoon, including a dramatic draw between Ipswich Town and Millwall at Portman Road, Frank Lampard’s side capitalised with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Swansea City in South Wales just a few hours later.

It was the West Midlands side’s sixth win in seven Championship games, with a 2-1 defeat to in-form Southampton the only recent blemish on their record, as they opened a nine-point lead at the top of the second tier with seven key games remaining.

Coventry have spent 25 largely tumultuous years outside the Premier League since their relegation in May 2001, but they are only a few weeks away from ending such a long exile, following two prior instances of play-off sorrow in the last three years.

Many of Lampard’s players have stepped up when it mattered most, and that was certainly the case at Swansea.Brandon Thomas-Asante, Matt Grimes, and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto scored to seal up the game before halftime at Com Stadium.

However, Sky Blues fans, Lampard, and the rest of his Premier League-bound squad will be delighted to learn that, arguably, City’s two most influential players could return to action the other side of the two-week fixture break for an all-Midlands clash with Derby County at the CBS Arena on Good Friday.

Coventry City could be with both Haji Wright and Jack Rudoni for Derby County showdown

Jack Rudoni and Haji Wright, Coventry City

Jack Rudoni and Haji Wright were two of the most noteworthy withdrawals from City’s squad for the vital victory over Vitor Matos’ Swans, with it being revealed in the build-up to the match that the playmaker would be joined on the bench by the USMNT international for a short length of time.

Wright suffered a groin injury in the 62nd minute of the defeat to Southampton over a week ago and had to be replaced by Ellis Simms, with the injury also keeping him out of Mauricio Pochettino’s national squad for future friendlies against Belgium and Portugal.

The 27-year-old has faced criticism at various stages throughout the season, but he has previously stepped up with six goals in his previous six outings, including a hat-trick against Middlesbrough, to trail Zan Vipotnik by only one goal in the Golden Boot race.

Rudoni, meanwhile, has delivered plenty of critical moments for City despite a stop-start campaign due to ailments, the most recent of which was a calf strain.

However, Lampard did say that he hoped the 24-year-old will be back in training over the international break, which may see him and Wright face the Rams on Friday week.

Haji Wright and Jack Rudoni returns could help Coventry City over the promotion finish-line

No team in the Championship has scored as many goals as the Sky Blues, who have 81 in 39 games, with Wright and Rudoni scoring 28.

As a result, it demonstrates how important the creative duo have been, while also demonstrating how City have not been unduly reliant on them during periods of injury setback.

It is difficult to imagine a universe in which Coventry does not win the division at this time, and their returns will only add to the sense of optimism in CV6 as they strive to secure promotion as quickly as possible.
