Crackdown on parking concerns on busy Sheffield Street, Holywell Street, Grimesthorpe

Crackdown on parking concerns on busy Sheffield Street, Holywell Street, Grimesthorpe.

Following public concerns, a crackdown was launched on ‘anti-social’ parking near a major Sheffield road.

Sheffield Council and South Yorkshire Police took action against vehicles outside the Brightside Motors garage on Holywell Road in Grimesthorpe due to long-standing road, pavement, and parking problems.

They have now left massive concrete blocks on the pavement to prevent vehicles from parking there in the future.
The council claims it moved in response to repeated warnings from citizens and councillors about pedestrian and motorist safety hazards.

In a collaborative effort with police, they removed what the council described as unsafe and abandoned vehicles that had been blighting the region for years.

According to officials, the council, the Health and Safety Executive, South Yorkshire Police, and the DVLA have previously taken enforcement action, but problems have persisted.

The operation centred on automobiles left outside Brightside Motors in a’severely damaged or unsafe’ condition, several of which were described as being placed on the public pavement, obstructing access to bus stops and forcing pedestrians into the road.

Officers dismantled them and built permanent barriers to avoid additional disruption.

In the days before the operation, South Yorkshire Police and the DVLA targeted untaxed and unroadworthy vehicles on nearby residential streets.

Councillor Mark Rusling, deputy chairman of the council’s Environmental Services and Regulation Policy Committee, stated, “Businesses that have a negative impact on their local communities by leaving dangerous, untaxed and unroadworthy vehicles on public highways must stop.” Further action will be taken in the coming weeks. Vehicles that are abandoned, unroadworthy, or untaxed will be removed.

“We work on behalf of residents who are fed up with anti-social activity, and together with our partners, we identify and address complex long-standing situations like this one around the city.

The safety of local residents, pedestrians, and cars is critical, and we will continue to take action against irresponsible enterprises that ruin our neighbourhoods.
A spokesperson for Brightside Motors stated that they believed they had been targeted.
He stated, “Sheffield is a large city, and automobiles are parked on pavements in other areas such as Carlisle Street and Sorby Street.

“We have tried to work with the council on this and we have bought a piece of land to store vehicles on.”
