Reading FC star among Ireland squad despite uncertain future.
Reading forward Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan has travelled to Ireland for the club’s pre-season tour, despite ongoing uncertainty about his future, according to the Reading Chronicle.
The 22-year-old Academy graduate is closing in on a century of Royals appearances and has emerged as a key player for both Ruben Selles and Noel Hunt since the club’s relegation to League One.
Despite scoring 11 goals in 2023/24, a long-term injury last season limited his impact to four goals and three assists.
Ehibhatiomhan is out of contract and has received interest from clubs in the division, but he has yet to commit his future on paper, despite a deal being on the table. Despite this, the forward played and scored in Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Swindon Town before flying to Ireland for a three-day training camp with the rest of the squad and coaches.
Speaking to fans at the Bearwood Open Day, both the player and manager Hunt admitted that they expect a deal to be reached between the two parties, and that the remaining part of pre-season plans will support this.
However, with less than three weeks until the start of the League One season, both parties would like to know their position well before the trip to Lincoln City on August 2. “We’re still in contact with the agent and Kelvin himself,” CEO Joe Jacobson told BBC Sport last week. “We’ve gone back and forth several times, as we have with many other players
. It won’t be easy; he’s a top player, and we want to put together a deal that allows him to stay. “We believe we have really done that with the latest contract offer we have handed out, at the moment we’re still waiting to see what happens there.”
Hunt has stated that he is critical to strengthening the broad areas that Ehibhatiomhan typically controls, and that he intends to bring experience.
Reading return to Berkshire this evening ahead of Saturday’s visit from Europa League champions Tottenham Hotspur, which is expected to draw over 20,000 fans.
