Ipswich Town: Blues interested in signing veteran Ashley Young.
The East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star report that Ipswich Town is interested in signing Premier League veteran Ashley Young.
The 40-year-old is a free agent after leaving Everton, having been in talks to join Watford earlier this summer.
However, the Watford Observer claims that the Hornets will not pursue a deal because they are unwilling to ‘break their wage structure’ to sign him.
Since then, TalkSPORT has reported that Young is ‘likely to join’ the Blues this summer. At this point, we know he’s a target for the club, but no final decision has been made on an offer.

The full-back progressed through Watford’s academy before joining Manchester United after four years at Aston Villa. He spent nine years at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Europa League.
After winning the Serie A title with Inter Milan in 2021, he returned to England, joining Aston Villa and then Everton, where he played from 2023 until the end of last season.
Young, a 39-cap England international, has expressed a desire to extend his playing career, and Town could provide him with the opportunity to do so in the Premier League.A 39-cap England international, Young has stressed that he is keen to extend his playing career, and Town could offer him the chance to do so in the Premier League.
Young had one goal and three assists in the Premier League last season (Image: PA). Alex’s verdict. I can see both sides of this one.
From what I understand, Young’s potential arrival has nothing to do with Sam Morsy’s departure. It’s not a desire for more leadership at the club, though he would certainly bring that quality.
He has a wealth of high-level experience, which could benefit a team that lacks it. He has represented England in major tournaments, played 485 Premier League games, and won several trophies.
Despite turning 40 earlier this month, he comes off the back of a top-flight campaign where he bagged one goal and three assists in 32 appearances.
He would be a versatile full-back, able to play both on the left and right. Furthermore, if he decides to retire, there will almost certainly be a coaching path available to him.
We’ve seen it happen before under Kieran McKenna, and the two previously worked together at Manchester United, so they know each other well. On the other hand, a full-back would be low on my priority list for summer signings.
The Blues are well covered, with two options on each flank and versatile centre-backs who can fill in when needed.
His age will be mentioned a lot, and it would certainly be an eye-catching signing as a result, but on a short-term deal as a free agent, I can see the benefits.
