West Ham United have informed left-back Emerson that he can leave the club this summer, according to BBC’s Sami Mokbel.
West Ham United had a disappointing season last year. Manager Julen Lopetegui received substantial financial support prior to the season, and his first-team squad was expanded significantly. Despite this, the Spaniard was unable to establish any consistency with his players and was eventually fired in January.
Graham Potter, formerly of Chelsea and Brighton, was brought in as his replacement and had a relatively indifferent season. The Hammers finished comfortably in the middle of the standings, never threatening to move further up. Potter is now in the middle of his first preseason and transfer window.
West Ham have already been busy in the transfer market, adding Kyle Walker-Peters and El Hadji Malick Diouf to improve their options at right and left back, respectively. Those arrivals, particularly the latter, may have influenced West Ham’s choice to let one specific player leave.
Emerson to Leave West Ham.
According to Sami Mokbel, Emerson, who earns £95,000 per week, is “nursing a minor back injury,” and has not travelled with the West Ham squad for pre-season. However, the Italy international has been advised that he can leave the club this summer after being a regular starter since coming from Chelsea in 2022.
Emerson, who started for the Hammers in the 2023 Conference League final, is still in his early thirties and might perhaps continue to play at a high level for a while. What is clear, however, is that this time will not be spent at London Stadium.
