After Liverpool lost to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield, Alexis Mac Allister raised his hands and took responsibility. In the yearly curtain-raiser at Wembley, the Reds lost 3-2 on penalties to the FA Cup winners, and the Argentina international missed their second penalty kick.
After missing the conclusion of the previous season due to an unidentified problem, the 26-year-old has just lately made a full recovery. He made his first appearance of the summer in Liverpool’s opening match against Athletic Bilbao last week after rejoining the whole squad for training during the preseason trip of Asia.
At Wembley on Sunday, Arne Slot’s team was ahead 2-1 when Mac Allister was substituted in the 71st minute. However, he was powerless to stop Ismaila Sarr from tying the score for the Eagles a few minutes later.
Dean Henderson then denied him in the shootout after the goalie made a good dive and tipped his low penalty around the post. After Mohamed Salah had missed his own attempt, Mac Allister’s save was made. Harvey Elliott’s penalty was eventually saved and Liverpool lost.
Following the missed spot-kick, Mac Allister took to social media to address fans in a statement following the Reds’ Community Shield loss.
He posted on Instagram, “We are here to take responsibility, both in the good times and the bad.” “Let’s continue to prepare for the launch of a fresh Premier League campaign.
“We appreciate everyone who came to Wembley to cheer on the team; we’ll see you at Anfield on Friday.”
The Netherlands international ultimately struggled in the first 2-2 draw with Palace, and Liverpool captain Vigil van Dijk also took to Instagram following the loss at Wembley.
In addition to failing to play Sarr offside in the goal that forced penalties, the 34-year-old carelessly gave up the penalty that gave Jean-Philippe Mateta Palace their first equalizer, nullifying Hugo Ekitike’s opening goal.
Due to illness, Van Dijk missed Liverpool’s last two preseason games against Athletic Bilbao. After his brief absence, the center-back hinted that he was still getting healthy.
He posted on Instagram, “First of all, congrats to Crystal Palace.” “Hard for us and personally, keep your head down, work hard, and get better!
As I continue to work my way back to fitness and health, it was nice to get more time outside. Now is the time to concentrate on the future. I am really excited to return to Anfield!
