Exclusive: Sky pundit praises “excellent” Charlton Athletic recruitment after Watford win.
Harvey Knibbs, a new Charlton Athletic signing, had a dream debut, scoring the winner against Watford on the first day. The 26-year-old signed a four-year contract with The Valley earlier this month and appeared on the bench for the Addicks’ first game back in the Championship.
He replaced Joshua Edwards in the 80th minute and wasted no time introducing himself, scoring a stoppage-time winner to earn all three points for his new team.
We asked Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman how important Knibbs could be for Charlton this season.
Don Goodman drops Charlton Athletic, Harvey Knibbs claim.
Goodman, speaking exclusively to Football League World, said: “What a dream day for Charlton Athletic to be back in the Championship on Saturday.” “More than that, it was a dream debut for Harvey Knibbs, who will be desperate to prove his ability to play at Championship level.
“It was a dream start, and it was typical Harvey Knibbs to arrive on the scene and score a goal. “I believe that is exactly why Nathan Jones bought him, and he immediately repaid him.
“Great day all around for Harvey Knibbs, Nathan Jones, and Charlton Athletic. “I think there were many people’s favourites to struggle this year, but they look very, very competitive to me, and I think their recruitment has been excellent.”
Jones will hope to recapture Knibbs’ Reading form.
Knibbs is one of those rare players who can perform admirably almost anywhere on the pitch; a desirable trait for managers who can take advantage of his adaptability when working with a small squad.
Knibbs is capable of playing on the wing, in the middle, up front, or deeper in midfield. He’s also never far from a goal, having scored 14 and assisted on six others for Reading in League One last season.
Jones, who took just over 10 minutes to open his account with the Addicks, will hope that this is just the beginning of his form transferring to The Valley.
