QPR youngsters beaten by Plymouth in Carabao Cup.
Plymouth came back from two down to knock QPR out of the Carabao Cup. Rangers fielded an extremely young team for the first round match and led at halftime thanks to goals from Daniel Bennie and Rayan Kolli, as well as a penalty save by keeper Paul Nardi.
But Brendan Wiredu scored for Argyle three minutes into the second half, and Owen Oseni’s brace saw the League One side through. Summer signings QPR’s Jaylen Pearman and Tylon Smith made their debuts, as did Jaiden Putman and Alex Wilkie at senior level.
In addition, Kalen Brunson became the club’s second-youngest first-team appearance maker. The Bermudian winger came on as a late substitute, along with fellow 16-year-old Ashley Trujillo, who became QPR’s third youngest player.
Frank Sibley, a former R’s player, coach, and manager, made his first-team debut at the age of 15 in 1963, which remains the club record. West London Sport had revealed that Rangers’ squad would be made up of young players, with Brunson and Trujillo potentially involved.
Midway through the first half, the visitors took an unexpected lead.
After good work by Harvey Vale and then Kolli, Elijah Dixon-Bonner delivered a diagonal ball from the left to Rumarn Burrell, whose header was parried by keeper Lucas Ashby-Hammond and tapped in from close range by Bennie.
Plymouth were awarded a penalty four minutes later after Burrell fouled Tegan Finn, but the recalled Nardi, who had been dropped for Saturday’s Championship opener against Preston, saved Jamie Paterson’s spot kick.
Plymouth immediately regained possession, but Rangers scored again in first-half stoppage time.
Vale, who made his full debut for the R’s alongside Burrell, was involved again, sending in a left-footed cross from the right flank for Kolli to head home at the far post.
Plymouth continued to dominate immediately after the break, and this time it paid off: they were level within nine minutes.
Wiredu headed in Victor Pálsson’s cross, and Osensi slid in to score at the far post after Nardi was caught off guard by Ayman Benarous’ left-wing delivery.
Rangers were undone by another cross for the winner, with Osensi scoring uncontested after being found by Caleb Watts.
QPR: Nardi, Putman (86), Wilkie, Smith, Vale, Dixon-Bonner (Tarbotton 90), Pearman (Trujillo 86), Sutton (Talla 46), Bennie, Kolli, and Burrell. Salamon, Leahy, McCann, and Tuck were not used as substitutes.
