Millwall boss on where Adam Mayor could play after Coventry City left-back appearance.
ALEX Neil feels Adam Mayor can play on the left flank after playing him at left-back against Coventry City on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old made his first appearance of the season, replacing Joe Bryan at halftime as the Lions defeated the Sky Blues 2-1 in the EFL Cup Second Round.
Mayor joined the club as a winger in January 2024, making four league substitute appearances in his debut season.
He sustained a hamstring injury that summer and did not return to first-team play until January, when Neil gave him his first start on the left wing in a 3-0 FA Cup Third Round win over Dagenham and Redbridge.
Mayor joined League Two club Bromley on loan shortly after, making seventeen league appearances, fifteen of which were starts.
He returned to Millwall in preseason, starting at left-back against Northampton Town on July 15 and continuing in the same position against Coventry.
“He’s been at left-back when he’s been on loan,” Neil told me. “I watched him play as a left-back for Bromley. “I believe Adam is physically capable of playing left-back or further up, given his size and stature.
“He still has a lot of work to do, obviously, as a young player trying to get to the level and demonstrate that he’s ready for this level right now.” But again, tonight was another good exposure for him. Got 45 minutes against a good side, so it’s good.”
