“However, we understand that some people believe the city is unsafe. “That’s why we’re urging everyone to watch out for one another and report anything that doesn’t seem right.

“We can all be aware, informed, and prepared to act. “We have a thriving and busy nighttime economy, and we want everyone to enjoy visiting with confidence.”

More than £1 million in Safer Streets funding has aided progress, allowing patrols to be expanded, lighting and CCTV upgraded, and increased assistance provided to vulnerable households.

In response to increased nightly activity over the summer, the council continues to collaborate with external security partners to maintain a visible presence in the city centre.

Two community safety officers are deployed on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., wearing high-visibility vests and carrying pub-link radios. These officers respond to complaints and aid police with evidence collection as necessary.

In recent weeks, neighbourhood wardens have given 19 fixed penalty letters as well as two community protection warnings.

Environmental improvements, such as a deep clean of St Johns Car Park, are part of a larger effort to make public spaces safer and more welcoming.

A representative for Essex Police stated, “ASB accounts for 8.2% of all reported crime in Colchester, with a rate of 7.8 ASB crimes per 1,000 inhabitants.

“Colchester ranks much lower than the national average of 14.09 ASB offences per 1,000 people, making it one of the safest regions in England and Wales for anti-social behaviour.

“We are proud of this improvement in Colchester, reinforcing the reputation that it is a safe and welcoming city.”
