Seven heaven for Coventry City in ground-breaking home win.

Even goals were scored, a stadium was secured, and Sky Blue fans will remember this night fondly.

On the day Coventry City announced the historic purchase of the Coventry Building Society Arena, Frank Lampard’s side celebrated emphatically by defeating Queens Park Rangers 7-1 on their official new home ground.

Haji Wright set the tone early with a brilliant strike after twelve minutes after a fast Milan van Ewijk ball, and Coventry pushed their lead ruthlessly.

The lead was increased when Jack Rudoni intercepted a poor pass from QPR midfielder Kieran Morgan, setting up Brandon Thomas-Asante for a controlled finish.

He curled the ball into the bottom corner with a delicate touch after it dropped to him just inside the box.

Torp’s second goal, bending a screamer into the top corner from 25 yards out, capped Coventry’s relentless goal-scoring show.

QPR scored a consolation goal in stoppage time when Richard Kone headed in from a set piece, but the damage had been done. Coventry’s dominance was total, with attacking coherence and precision finishing on a new level from previous season.

The consistency of Coventry’s team adds to their success.

While other Championship clubs spent heavily in the summer window to rebuild their squads, the Sky Blues remained confident in the core group that made the play-offs last season under Lampard.

The lack of transfer activity may have been a matter of concern amongst fans, but the club has succeeded in keeping nearly all of their key players on the books, after alleged interest from Southampton in Jack Rudoni, and from Wolfsburg in Milan Van Ewijk.

So far, Coventry has benefited from its stability.

Wright and Torp are among the league’s top scorers after three games, Van Ewijk leads the assists list, and Rudoni and Thomas-Asante are thriving in an assault that understands each other’s movements to a T.

The victory comes after another high-scoring performance against Derby, with Coventry winning 5-3, and a goalless draw with Hull on the first day.

. A midweek EFL Cup exit to Millwall with some rested players may be disappointing, but it may allow Coventry to focus only on promotion to the Premier League this season.

Looking ahead, after a 2-2 draw with Oxford United, the Sky Blues will travel to Norwich before facing Leicester City away at the King Power Stadium.

Performances such as the 7-1 victory over QPR suggest the club has the cohesion to compete at the top of the table, but the game against Leicester, another promotion hopeful, will be a true test of how far Coventry can go this season.Coventry fans have every reason to cheer right now.

Their stadium is officially theirs, their squad came close to setting a record with a seven-goal performance, and they are currently ranked fifth in the Championship.

It was a game that perfectly reflected the promise of the upcoming season, and perhaps Coventry can keep it going.
