Regis Le Bris sets out Sunderland Dan Neil stance.
REGIS Le Bris has commended Dan Neil’s response to losing his position in the Sunderland squad.
And, despite the fact that he has yet to play in the Premier League, the head coach has assured last season’s captain that his opportunities would arrive.
When Noah Sadiki was changed in midfield late in the tie with Crystal Palace, Le Bris chose to bring on Lutsharel Geertruida, a defender, instead of Neil.
However, Sunderland’s manager has now moved to justify his choice, saying: “Noah had a knee problem early in the game.
I believe the decision we wanted to make at that time was Dan’s. “But later in the game for the final fight, they went direct so I think the more defensive profile was probably the best solution, which was Gertruida.”
Le Bris has often stated that last season’s important players must be able to step up to Premier League level, so does the fact that he planned to replace Sadiki with Neil early against Palace imply that the midfielder has made progress in recent weeks?
“I think he trains really well,” remarked Le Bris. “He’s still very interested and devoted to the process. “Until you play, you won’t know. I’m always upbeat since I’ve spent my entire life working with young athletes.
They can take us by surprise. “If they have excellent foundations, are talented, and work hard, all they need are opportunities. “The competition is currently underway.
In this situation, he has the best right in front of him, which is good for him and the team; he just needs to wait a little.” Neil will almost probably have an opportunity later this year when several Sunderland players, including Sadiki and Habib Diarra, travel to the African Cup of Nations.
“We need the entire squad,” Le Bris stated.
“We are taking care of everyone because we know at the end of the season every contribution will be really important, especially for this period because we know we will probably lose five, six or seven players.”
