Former Hibs and Sunderland ace ‘waiting by the phone’ for new club as he opens up on ‘tough’ free agency stint
Former Hibs and Sunderland ace ‘waiting by the phone’ for new club as he opens up on ‘tough’ free agency stint.
The former Hibernian and Sunderland player is seeking for his next challenge in football.
A former Hibs and Sunderland star is open to offers as he remains a free agent when the transfer market closes. Dylan McGeouch is well remembered by Hibernian fans as a member of the 2016 Scottish Cup-winning team.
After starting with Celtic, the midfielder spent three successful years in Leith, which won him a move to Sunderland. He left the Black Cats to join Aberdeen and has since played for Forest Green Rovers and, most recently, Carlisle United.
McGeouch was a member of the PFA’s free agent squad for pre-season, which is a group of out-of-contract players placed in a club-like setting for suitors to try to get into their teams.
Still on the market, the experienced ex-Hibs and Sunderland playmaker spoke on Clyde SSB to talk about his present situation.
Dylan McGeouch on time as free agent
He stated, “It’s been obviously tough over the summer, just keeping myself fit and trying to keep myself ticking over until hopefully the phone rings and I can find a new club.” I work out in the gym and run occasionally, but there’s the English PFA.
“They held a pre-season camp over the summer, and because I’d been down the road for a few years, I was entitled to go down and spend about five or six weeks there. Four days at a time, everything is paid for, so that’s a good standard.
“The players and coaching were of high quality, and everyone caught up quickly. It’s almost like a club environment, which is fantastic. So many players have clubs out the back of that, and a couple of us are definitely still waiting by the phone.”
What are benefits of PFA free agency squad?
Gordon Dalziel, a former Rangers and Raith Rovers player, was also on the panel and said: “It’s amazing down south; they give you so many possibilities to come back into the game.
I’m not simply saying that; he appears to be in excellent physical condition. There are a number of guys in the same position seeking for clubs, but they are all 32. I did some study on him, and he’s still got plenty of football left in him.”
He said: “It’s been a terrific opportunity for a lot of the youngsters to come in and play with other players, get on-field coaching, and regain their fitness. I think it’s a fantastic event that the PFA organised, and I absolutely enjoyed it.
“It’s been wonderful not only on the pitch, but they’re obviously feeding you a lot of data and any little things you might need nutritionally and so on.
They are happy to assist with anything they can. I believe a lot of older boys find it easier because it’s obviously a stressful time not knowing where you’re going to be and such, but for older boys, coming home with families and things to do can definitely take your mind off things.”
