How did Wrexham contain ‘best in the league’ Josh Sargent? Phil Parkinson explains how Red Dragons kept six-goal USMNT striker quiet
How did Wrexham contain ‘best in the league’ Josh Sargent? Phil Parkinson explains how Red Dragons kept six-goal USMNT striker quiet.
Phil Parkinson has detailed how Wrexham were able to limit “best in the league” Josh Sargent against Norwich City.
The USMNT striker came into the game with six goals, but drew a blank against the Red Dragons, as the Welsh side won 3-2 at Carrow Road, relieving some of the burden on their manager.
Change in the dugout? Reports quickly rubbished
Those in the Wrexham camp have been keen to dismiss any idea of Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney changing the dugout, although positive results were needed after a sluggish start to the 2025-26 season.

Contained Sargent to prevail in five-goal thriller
After behind at half-time, the Red Dragons recovered to win in Norfolk, with Sargent’s significant threat neutralised.
Parkinson said of keeping the US international quiet: “We were up against the league’s finest striker today, Josh Sargent. We spent a lot of time working on him and determining how we should deal with him.
He’s a dangerous player, but we had fantastic attention levels. There was a lot of tiredness out there, and as they tracked his runs, they closed in on him, limiting a really good player to very little.”
Wrexham have enjoyed a meteoric rise
Parkinson is thrilled to have added another three points, while Wrexham’s record-breaking promotion-winning coach calls for perspective.
He remarked of battling against the Championship elite, “I wanted the lads to enjoy the game. Four years ago, we were down here playing King’s Lynn away in front of 800 people. I want people to know how far we’ve come.”
