A Middlesbrough player will have a medical before leaving for £11 million.
During the summer transfer window, Middlesbrough took their time getting going, but things have already begun to pick up. Rob Edwards, the manager of Boro, wants to shape his new team to his preferences.
Although he will be assisted in doing so by the additions of Callum Brittain, Alfie Jones, and Abdoulaye Kante, Teesside has focused much of its attention on players who could depart this summer.
Both midfielder Hayden Hackney and Rav van den Berg have been linked to moves to higher levels. Actually, some people would have thought that these transfers would have already been made, but that is going to change.
The center-back van den Berg of Middlesbrough is expected to sign with 1.FC Koln, a German team, according to Teesside Live.
After a transfer fee was agreed upon, the young Dutchman is going to the Bundesliga team for a physical. With a sell-on provision in the contract, Koln is anticipated to pay €13 million, or roughly £11.2 million, to acquire the 21-year-old.
Due to their own sell-on, Van den Berg’s former team, PEC Zwolle, will get a share of the fee.
It’s possible that Middlesbrough went into the summer transfer market hoping to hold onto guys like van den Berg. Nonetheless, there is speculation of interest following yet another exceptional season of development on Teesside.
Boro has never prevented the sale of important assets at the right price, and the young Dutchman had no intention of changing that. Including a sell-on clause is a smart move because he is a highly recognized prospect with big expectations.
Given the chance to move to the continent and play in the Bundesliga on a major stage, few will be critical of van den Berg and his decision to leave. Since the player has two years left on his contract and isn’t fussing over a move, Boro also gets market value for him, which is advantageous to all parties.
What could happen during the rest of the summer transfer window?
Middlesbrough opened the Edwards era with a victory over Swansea City, but it’s clear that their roster needs improvement if they hope to close the gap to the playoffs after two unsuccessful seasons.
Since it is quite likely that a replacement for van den Berg will be sought, the £11.2 million profit from his departure will be used right away.
More attacking depth would be advantageous overall, and another striker is probably going to be added. Another center midfielder might come up on the Boro radar, depending on how midfielder Hackney’s situation turns out.
