Former football prospect from Dundee caught drug-dealing as life ‘spiralled’.
Luke Mackie, 24, has been jailed for the latest in a string of offences. A former football prodigy who was discovered drug-dealing in Dundee as his life spiralled out of control has been sentenced to another prison term.
Luke Mackie, a violent domestic abuser, admitted to supplying Class A drugs from his Dundee home. In April, the 24-year-old was imprisoned and given a 12-month supervised release term, which he later violated.
In July 2024, Mackie, a former member of the Dundee FC performance school, was discovered with a stockpile of heroin, cocaine, and cannabis at his Menzieshill house.
Mackie was sleeping when police stormed the home, and the court heard how they discovered two phones, scales, and a tick list, as well as £280 cash. According to fiscal depute Lee Corr, the substances found had a maximum street worth of approximately £11,000.
‘Downwards spiral’
Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith earlier called Mackie a “coward” for arming himself at Taza, City Quay, in October 2024 and harassing restaurant employees. He was discovered with a knife and a meat cleaver, and the same sheriff believed Mackie had the capacity to kill someone.
Another sheriff had previously imprisoned Mackie for a violent knife attack on his ex-partner. Mackie appeared via video link from HMP Perth to be sentenced for narcotics selling.
“At a previous hearing, solicitor advocate Jane Caird said: “He was drug-dealing at a low level, effectively to fund his own habit.”When he was 17, he was released from a contract for professional football. “His life spiralled downwards from there. “A few more things happened. There was a knock-on effect.
“He started using drugs heavily, he had quite a lot of debt and still had a habit.” Sheriff George Way stated that there were no alternatives to custody for Mackie. He was sentenced to 22 months in prison.
