‘Have to pay overs to keep’: Pies’ star dilemma; Saints’ skipper puzzle — Toughest AFL trade calls.
Collingwood is in a bind with one of its most beloved players due to rival interest, while St Kilda must make a difficult decision over its captain.
Plus, a “pretty rare” case in which a superstar’s departure may be expedited, as well as a “low-risk, high-yield” move at the Kennel.
On Fox Footy’s digital-only show Tackle the Headline, Herald Sun panellists Lauren Wood, Scott Gullan, and Josh Barnes explored four of the most difficult contract and trade decisions at clubs in October. Adam Treloar (Western Bulldogs)
Treloar, 32, was an All-Australian last year, but his season has been hampered by calf ailments, with him playing only four senior games – the fewest of his career.
However, the out-of-contract midfielder is taking part in Footscray’s VFL finals campaign in an effort to extend his successful career.
Wood responds: “Our colleague Jon Ralph is reporting that Adam Treloar could have a one-year deal on the table if he gets through the VFL finals series, but it’s hard to argue against Adam not being in this category of the tough decisions that the Bulldogs are going to have to make in the coming weeks.”
Gullan: “I admire how they made him play for it; he did it on his own volition. He might have said, ‘Oh, I’ll sit this one out, this season was a waste, I’ll be fit, I’ll be OK. “I like that the Bulldogs are only looking at one-year contracts.
I don’t think he’ll find a better bargain anywhere.” Barnes: “I think he provides terrific midfield depth, but you’d have to be very certain that he’ll be fit and playing.
I believe other clubs would consider him if he were available, but it would be a cheap trade. He’s looking at one of the most significant cash downgrades we’ve seen. He was (on) approximately $1 million… that deal is over now.
“He’s a wonderful club person, and he contributes significantly to that side of things. “I believe it is a low-risk, high-yield move.”
In August, fellow veteran Tom Liberatore, 33, signed a one-year contract.
