Hibs surrender lead and Scottish Premiership points – ratings and report as Killie come back at Easter Road.
Out of place and out of character – who stood out, for better or worse? Two points were dropped. A two-goal lead was surrendered.
And an unusually error-filled performance from Hibs, who had looked so good in Belgrade and dominant in Dundee. The boos at full-time after the 2-2 draw at Easter Road were not directed at David Gray’s team, but rather at the refereeing team who had enraged some locals, as is customary for officials.
Finally, this was an unsatisfactory experience for fans who had witnessed such European highs on Thursday night, whether in person or on television. On a day when Scotland defender Grant Hanley made his debut, Rocky Bushiri rose to power home a thumping header with 20 minutes remaining.
Elie Youan then scored his first goal since December 21 – in his first start since Boxing Day – just six minutes later, setting off some truly joyous celebrations. Complete with audience participation.
Liam Polworth gave Kilmarnock a lifeline they barely deserved just before halftime, but Ben Brannan’s early Goal of the Season contender made it 2-2 early in the second period.
And, in truth, either side could have won a game marked by some erratic defending. In a home side that made three changes from their midweek heroics in the Balkans, with Hanley, Junior Hoilett, and Youn replacing Jack Iredale, Chris Cadden, and Boyle, there was no early sign of Hibernian’s rhythm being disrupted.
There were a few shaky defensive moments, but the opening exchanges were generally controlled. It came as no surprise that they took the lead. It wasn’t surprising to see Jamie McGrath and big-moment specialist Bushiri combine.
McGrath simply drilled the ball hard – and we mean hard – across the six-yard box at a height of about seven-and-a-half feet after winning a free kick following Jordan Obita’s adventure down the left. Bushiri met it with his forehead at the back post, sending his effort screaming past a defeated Max Stryjek.
Youan made it 2-0 just over five minutes later, taking a sublime through ball from Hoilett and beating Stryjek despite the goalkeeper’s touch on the ball. Hibs were now firmly in control of the game. And looking for new goals.
Bushiri, on the other hand, was too easily beaten by Marcus Dackers on the wing, after the centre-back gave up possession early on with a surging run and an inaccurate pass, allowing the Killie No. 9 to cut the ball back for Polworth. His sliding effort was successful despite Jordan Obita’s best efforts on the goal line.
Dackers squandered a golden opportunity just 30 seconds into the second half, shooting over from five yards out with little pressure. However, the equaliser was not long in coming. Hibs actually cleared their lines quite well after a corner kick.
They couldn’t explain Brannan’s incredible goal, a right-footed volley from well outside the box that arced over Jordan Smith and into the far top corner.
As the game entered its final phase, both teams had chances, with goalkeeper Smith almost giving Killie a goal, and Josh Mulligan making the wrong decision on a three-man counterattack with Dylan Levitt and substitute Martin Boyle.
Mulligan’s hard running and Boyle’s goal-scoring instincts contributed significantly. But Hibs never seemed to click. And had to settle for a single point when they could have had three.

1. GK Jordan Smith 5/10
Call it an off day. Or a total football breakdown. He couldn’t do anything about either Killie goal. However, back passes caused a great deal of stress and strife for Hibs’ undisputed number one. | SNS Group.

2. RCB Warren O’Hora 5.5/10
To deal with the Dacker threat, one had to be alert. As Hibs switched play, this helped to keep the ball moving along the back line. Probably just the best of a back three that appeared rattled in the second half, especially. | SNS Group.

3. CB Rocky Bushiri 5.5/10
Never dull. His second goal of the season came just four games into the new season, and it was slightly offset by his role in Killie’s counter-attack moments before halftime. I was involved in a few truly hair-raising incidents. | Getty Images.

4. LCB Grant Hanley 5.5/10
The vastly experienced Scotland centre half made his SPFL debut, starting on the left side of the back three. Iredale replaced him just before the hour mark after he looked okay. SNS Group
