Hundreds attend ‘stop the boats’ protest.

Hundreds of people gathered for a “stop the boats” protest, while a smaller counter-demonstration was staged nearby.

Approximately 400 people attended the anti-immigrant march in Newtown, Powys, chanting against Labour and hearing from Reform UK councillor Karl Lewis, who quit the Conservatives in March.

At the same time, approximately 200 people gathered in a separate rally on a nearby street to support refugees and migrants.

Dyfed-Powys Police have been asked if any arrests were made.

Protesters at the anti-immigrant march chanted chants disparaging of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour government.
During his speech, Mr Lewis held a minute of silence for Charlie Kirk, a right-wing activist and influencer who was killed at a university event in the United States on Wednesday.
During the march through town, Steve Witherden, Labour MP for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr, and Liz Saville Roberts, Plaid Cymru for Dwyfor Meirionydd, spoke to the counter-demonstration.
