Ipswich Town manager discusses interest in Millwall winger Femi Azeez: ‘He was a guy the club thought could take us ahead’.
IPSWICH Town manager Kieran McKenna outlined why the Tractor Boys made a large bid for Femi Azeez on deadline day, describing him as someone who “could take us forward”.
Ipswich had expressed great interest in Azeez, 24, and had numerous bids rejected for the winger near the conclusion of the window, including one that would have constituted a club record sale on Monday.
In an interview with NewsAtDen the next day, Alex Neil stated that the club saw an opportunity to “do something quite special” and hoped the move would “pay dividends” as the Lions aim for their first top-six appearance in over 20 years.
Azeez has been key in that effort thus far, scoring seven goals and assisting three times.
McKenna was questioned about Ipswich’s interest in him today.
McKenna told the East Anglian Daily Times, “I wouldn’t usually speak about a player, but I know Millwall have already.”
“He has some very different attributes than the players we have in the facility. As I already stated, we needed to take advantage of this opportunity to improve the squad in whatever manner possible.
“He was a player that the club believed might help us move forward. In terms of bids and such, I’m not familiar with them, and they are not my area of expertise.”
