Jim Goodwin on Hibs getting ’50-50′ penalty call – United boss cites Willie Collum admission in VAR row

Jim Goodwin on Hibs getting ’50-50′ penalty call – United boss cites Willie Collum admission in VAR row.

Did the head of refs’ public statement on Sky Sports’subconsciously’ impact officials?

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin believes that with SFA head of referees Willie Collum openly weighing in on a refused Hibs penalty appeal, the Easter Road side was ALWAYS going to obtain a “50-50” result in last night’s Scottish Premiership battle.

And he claimed referee Dan MacFarlane was “subconsciously” influenced when he awarded David Gray’s squad a late penalty in a tense 3-3 draw.

Collum spoke with Sky Sports less than 24 hours before last night’s match, expanding on the Scottish FA’s Key Match Incident review panel’s admission that St Mirren’s Jayden Richardson should have been penalised for a handball in the box at the end of a 1-1 draw with Hibs just before the international break.

Collum dismissed protests that the ball hit the St Mirren player’s chest first, accusing Richardson of behaving as a “keeper” by blocking the shot.

Vicko Sevelj received a red card for handball in yesterday’s game after Kieron Bowie’s overhead kick struck the United midfielder’s outstretched arm.
Video assistant referee John Beaton intervened to point out the claim before referee Dan MacFarlane conducted an on-field review, giving Jamie McGrath the opportunity to equalise from the spot.

David Gray believes ref got it right

Goodwin immediately linked the two occurrences, adding, “I don’t believe it’s a penalty. I am sure David Grey will have a different opinion.” When I saw the VAR review before the game, I was rather concerned.

I overheard what the head of referees said about the St Mirren game when the penalty was not awarded. ” That strikes me as really different. I believe the St Mirren defender almost caught the ball on that occasion. I’m not sure what else Vicko Sevelj can do.

“He’s holding off a Hibs player, and then the ball hits his arm from a very close distance. “I am not sure what he is supposed to do in that situation.” I think it was quite severe.

These decisions are highly subjective. “But, obviously, with the opinion expressed in the previous game here against St Mirren, I believe as a referee, that must be in the back of your mind. It’s a painful way to lose points, without a doubt. “If Hibs had a carved-out opening and scored a really well-worked goal, you can accept that.

But that one is problematic, especially since Vicko has already been red carded.”We’ll look at it (appealing for the red card), but I believe by the letter of the law… I reasoned that if it was a purposeful handball, the outcome might be different.

However, it appears that he was denied a clean opportunity to score. By the letter of the law, I believe that results in a red card.

We’ll have a look at it as a club, naturally. We’ll get a couple people’s opinions and see what possibilities we have.
