Male swimmer dies swimming off Brighton on New Year’s Day.

A man died while swimming on New Year’s Day.

A male swimmer got into difficulty in the water off Albion Groyne in Brighton yesterday morning, prompting the response of coastguard rescue teams, the Brighton RNLI inshore lifeboat, the police, the ambulance service, and the air ambulance. A spokesman for Sussex Police confirmed the man’s death.

He said: “Police were notified to a male who had been collected from the sea after becoming disoriented to the west of Brighton Palace Pier approximately 10.35 a.m. on Thursday, January 1.

“A 51-year-old guy from Kettering was carried to shore and given medical care. Sadly, he was pronounced deceased on the scene.
His nearest of kin have been notified. “The coroner has been informed, and the death is not being treated as suspicious.”
