Middlesbrough keen on free agent after Sheffield Wednesday exit along with Wrexham

After leaving Sheffield Wednesday and Wrexham, Michael Smith is reportedly of interest to Middlesbrough, according to the Daily Mail.

The striker has been linked to a summer transfer to Middlesbrough. Boro is preparing for another Championship season.

Smith, 33, and Sheffield Wednesday have agreed to split ways. Now, as a free agent, he will assess his choices.

According to the Daily Mail’s most recent report on his situation, Rob Edwards is keen to entice him to Riverside Stadium. Wrexham has been mooted as a potential suitor, though. Meanwhile, MK Dons and Blackpool are also fans, according to a recent story from The Star.

“He’s a bit of a throwback in his physicality as a number nine, in the sense that he’s a powerhouse in the air, gets on the end of crosses, messes defenders around, and he’s got eight goals and four assists in just 12 starts,” Don Goodman said in an earlier interview with Football League World this year.

“Now that I know he came off the bench for a big portion of those goal involvements, I honestly believe that’s why, at 33, I would probably be keeping him if I were Sheffield Wednesday.”

Middlesbrough is interested in Michael Smith after he left Sheffield Wednesday. Smith might be viewed by Middlesbrough as a means of expanding their offensive possibilities. In the upcoming weeks, Boro will be seeking fresh players.

At the top of the field, the player from the North East would offer more depth and competition. He would also give their ranks experience.

Smith, who scored 33 goals in 127 games with Sheffield Wednesday, eight of which came during the previous season, joined the Owls in 2022 and helped them win promotion from League One in his first year.

He scored 61 goals in 210 games for Rotherham United before to joining Hillsborough. The attacker has also played for Portsmouth, Swindon Town, and Charlton Athletic in the past.

Now that Michael Smith is no longer at Sheffield Wednesday, what happens?

Middlesbrough will face competition from other teams, but they are still in the running. In this chase, Boro might have to draw attention away from MK Dons, Blackpool, and Wrexham.

Throughout this window, Edwards will be keen to leave his mark on his recently acquired squad. Last month, the former Luton Town player was announced as Michael Carrick’s successor.

Up front, Sheffield Wednesday will need to find a replacement. It’s hardly ideal that the Owls are presently juggling some off-field issues.
