Millwall boss: ‘We should’ve won the game’ but happy with performance in Southampton draw.

ALEX Neil believed Millwall should have beaten Southampton at St Mary’s, but praised his side’s “great performance” in the goalless draw.

The Lions dominated the Saints from the start and appeared to be the more likely of the two teams to score, with Thierno Ballo having two great opportunities.

Southampton were mainly ineffective going forward, but they almost stole all three points at the end when Adam Armstrong got in behind and squared the ball for Finn Azaz. Caleb Taylor, on the other hand, made a fantastic block to prevent him from scoring, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis headed wide when the Saints recycled the ball.

Neil shared his opinion on the clash on the southern shore. “To come here, not having any recognised midfield players available, Josh Coburn and Mihailo [Ivanovic] out, and changing our shape again, I thought it was a great performance,” Neil told the BBC. “We should’ve won the game.”Ballo has a terrific first-half chance off a cut-back; he should probably locate a corner better.

He then has the finest chance of the game, and the custodian makes an incredible stop from about five yards out.

“Macca has one where he whips it, and it looks like it’s going to go top corner, but it just goes over the bar.” Then Ballo has another one, in which Macca plays him in and he shoots across the goal, which should certainly hit the mark.

“The main chance I recall Southampton having was late in injury time, when Armstrong comes down the side for a cutback, followed by a header. “But beyond that, I thought we were a terrific deal. Our shape was excellent.

Our press was good. We generated problems for them during the transfer. If we had taken one of our chances earlier in the game, I believe we would have won the match.

After Millwall’s previous away trip, a 2-0 loss to Blackburn Rovers, Neil described his team’s recent road performances as “a little bit milky”.
Neil was asked if he was especially satisfied with his performance today in light of that. “| think for how stretched we currently are as well,” Neil informed us.
“Unless you’re a Millwall fan, nobody else cares, which is OK.”However, we had no identifiable midfield players starting the game today. We had a wide left, a wide right, and a left-back. So, Camiel [Neghli] and Ballo have both played on the wide flanks for us when they were available.
Alfie has played left back.”So for those three men to walk into the middle of the pitch, and for Mika to be out, who’s basically been everywhere for us, and to put on that kind of performance, and possibly deserve to win the game, I’m overjoyed.
“More significantly, we just played Ipswich at home and kept a clean sheet. We just beat Bristol, and now we’ve come here and put up a strong performance.”
