Millwall’s Alex Neil responds to question on melee after final whistle at Bristol City

Millwall’s Alex Neil responds to question on melee after final whistle at Bristol City.

ALEX Neil says he is unconcerned about the outcome of any future probe into the events following Millwall’s 1-0 victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Both benches collided before players from both teams rushed in to join the melee.

The incident appeared to begin when Robins player Jason Knight accosted Neil and pushed him in the chest as the Lions manager attempted to shake hands with his opposite number Gerhard Struber.

Mihailo Ivanovic scored the sole goal in the 59th minute, and the hosts had a subsequent goal called out for offside.

Neil was subsequently questioned about his account of the clash. “I could give you exactly what happened, if you want?” Neil responded.

“What happened was that I went over to their coach to shake his hand after the game, as I do every game, and he kind of drew his hand away, which was upsetting.

” I’m not sure if Jason glanced at me and assumed I refused to shake his hand, which was obviously not the case, and then pushed me.

And suddenly there was just a swarm of people coming from all directions. There are handbags everywhere, and everyone is pushing and shoving. That was the long and short of it.

“I understand his [Struber’s] frustration; he just had a disallowed goal, and all that sort of stuff. But, whether we win, lose, or draw, the first thing I always do is shake the opposing team’s hand, no matter how frustrated I am.

“It’s what it is.” I’m not crying over it; I have no issues with it. “What I will say is that I do not believe we were the instigators in that. From that standpoint, I’m more than satisfied with what occurred.”
