Eddie Howe needs a new striker, and it’s proving to be difficult
The club’s pursuit of Brentford’s Yoane Wissa is reaching a critical point, and some fans in the Chronicle Live comments section are urging the club’s management to do whatever it takes to finalize a transfer for a player who is obviously interested in playing on Tyneside. Eddie Howe needs a new forward who can score goals.
Newcastle has less than two weeks left in the transfer window to make a decision about whether to hold onto Wissa, a 28-year-old. The forward scored 19 goals in the Premier League the previous season and has one year left on his contract. Brentford is hesitant to let go of another good player, and they won’t do it cheaply when they have the opportunity to extend that term.
Wissa did not play in the team’s opening match of the season, and he removed any reference to Brentford from his Instagram profile, suggesting that he wants the move. Brentford is rumored to demand more than £60 million for him, but Newcastle is unwilling to spend more than £40 million.
If the team choose to move away from Wissa for the time being, they have other possibilities. For instance, they have Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku of Chelsea. For Nkunku, Newcastle would have to compete with Bayern Munich, but the team is apparently prepared to take on the German powerhouse.
A final push for Wissa is what some fans want to see. “We should just pay the extra for Wissa,” argues reader Axepete. He wants to play for us badly. He is an outstanding goal scorer and will be very motivated.
Although Nkunku is a good player, he is prone to injuries and disappears from games when things don’t go his way. Sincerely, I think that if we are successful in signing Wissa, we will be able to sell Isak and make investments in another striker and midfielder. Given the additional workload on our still-undermanned roster, the additional money is less important than our urgent need to add a top-tier striker.
“If we had to spend most of a Champions League and Premiership season without a recognized goal scorer, we would be forced into a relegation fight. I think it is crucial that we close this deal.
“Come on PIF, pay the money for Wissa,” comments commenter DM TOONY. We are not giving Brentford what they want, so they will lose their two best players. Every other elite player has been signed.
“Don’t miss out on Wissa, he will make all the difference in all competitions this season.”
The selling club is warned by N Shields Lad about the possible repercussions: “If his move is blocked, then he’ll definitely leave on a free next year and the owner is biting his own nose to spite his face, and will lose finances they could earn through the sale.”
Heegan83 states: “This is the man we need to score goals. Given their understanding of our situation, Brentford has undoubtedly spotted an opportunity to obtain a significantly greater price. However, we cannot afford to start the season without a goal scorer at this time, or it may end much sooner than we had intended.
Others, like Northshields, believe it’s time to move on, writing: “60 million for Wissa? Laughing. Now, that agreement will never be completed.
“Strand Larsen is definitely the alternative if we can’t get Wissa,” Scottymc states. Isak ought to be allowed to remain! He can leave on the club’s terms next summer.
Motivation states: “Newcastle is currently being held hostage when attempting to sign players due to their own ineptitude. They ought to abandon that type of negotiation. Two strikers are desperately needed. They must find a solution and then learn to avoid a similar situation in the future.
“I’ve repelled Jackson at all costs,” Bumpa states, “but we need someone, and £50 million is probably a fair price.” I’d accept that wager. Although he is a young striker, he may be a little rough around the edges.
