Rob Edwards acknowledges that whether or not he uses wing-backs going forward will probably depend on Middlesbrough’s summer transfer business.

To protect younger players who were coming on at the time, the new head coach started with a 3-4-2-1 system for Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Mansfield, the first friendly the team played in front of the public this summer.
