Sean Johnson posts 108th shutout as Toronto FC blank San Diego FC

Toronto FC blanks San Diego FC as Sean Johnson records his 108th shutout.

Theo Corbeanu’s penalty kick in the first half and Sean Johnson’s 108th career goal gave Toronto FC a 1-0 victory over visiting San Diego FC on Wednesday night. Corbeanu’s goal in the 20th minute helped Toronto FC (5-11-6, 21 points) stop San Diego FC’s famous offense. The Reds are now 3-0-2 against Western Conference opponents this season.

Johnson only needed one save to record his sixth shutout of the year. His career total is the fourth-highest in MLS history. San Diego FC (13-7-3, 42 points) remains in the top in the Western Conference despite the sluggish defeat. Toronto cautiously preserved its late one-goal advantage, just four nights after allowing Atlanta United to score in the eleventh minute of second-half stoppage time for a painful 1-1 tie.

Pablo Sisniega made just one save, but FC San Diego defeated 6-3-3 at home. San Diego controlled the ball for two thirds of the game and outshot Toronto 7–4 with all of their shots in the second half. The Reds scored two goals and San Diego scored one.

Despite leading the MLS with 46 goals, San Diego FC did not score in the first half and did not attempt to score until the 71st minute, when Johnson stopped Chucky Lozano’s right-footed attempt.

This was San Diego FC’s first match since they were defeated by a highly productive Milan Iloski earlier this week. Iloski’s loan was terminated amicably on Tuesday due to the parties’ failure to agree on the conditions of the contract. With ten goals, Iloski came in second on the team. Another factor that might have contributed to the lackluster offensive effort was the fact that Lozano, one of the team’s three All-Stars, didn’t enter the game until the 60th minute.

Lozano had a close-range opportunity in the 86th minute, but Toronto defender Alonso Coello saved his left-footed shot. Following that, the Reds avoided any late-game drama and went 2-4-2 over their next eight games. Corbeanu fell into the box after San Diego’s Franco Negri booted him in the right knee in the seventeenth minute.

Although no foul had been called at the time, replay officials decided that Corbeanu had been fouled and signaled for a review. With a right-footed boot into the top right corner of the net in the 20th minute, he scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season while standing at the precise moment.
