Sean Longstaff, a midfielder who reached an agreement with Leeds, has been let go by Newcastle United. The young player from North Shields departed St. James’ Park for an estimated £15 million plus add-ons.

Before setting up his transfer to Elland Road, the Academy product trained in Austria for a portion of the week. Longstaff will start right away after agreeing to a four-year deal with Leeds.

“It was going to take a lot for us to leave Newcastle to be honest and I wasn’t just going to leave to go anywhere so it had to be the right place for me and my family and I think this is a perfect place,” Longstaff stated after the transaction was finalized.

“I had the opportunity to watch almost every game and witnessed a team that was incredibly thrilling to watch, athletic, and skilled with the ball.

“Every time I came to play at Leeds the atmosphere was amazing it was always bouncing and a really tough place to play and just looking forward to having that on my side rather than having to play against.”

“There is something to be said for a team that wants you and a club that really wants you,” Longstaff continued. I believe I sensed Leeds’ genuine desire for me from the moment I chatted with them.

“It simply gives you more self-assurance and makes you want to pay those folks back. It is an enormous football team that is comparable to Newcastle in many aspects.

“Sean Longstaff has completed a permanent move to Leeds United for an undisclosed fee,” a statement from Newcastle said.

The 27-year-old, who left St. James’ Park with 214 appearances and 16 goals, was born in North Shields and enrolled in the Academy at the age of nine.

Following successful loan stints at Kilmarnock and Blackpool, Sean advanced through the club’s development system before making his senior Magpies debut against Nottingham Forest in August 2018.

Later that season, he made his Premier League debut, substituting in the second half against Liverpool at Anfield. Under Rafa Benítez, he quickly established himself as a staple in the squad.

“He was on goal in the historic 4-1 UEFA Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain later that year, and his semi-final brace against Southampton secured a spot in the 2023 Carabao Cup final.”

As a member of Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup-winning team from the previous season, Sean solidified his legacy by scoring the game-winning penalty in the shootout triumph over Forest, which sent the Magpies to Wembley and gave the team their first major domestic prize in 70 years.

“As a Newcastle United Foundation ambassador, he consistently supported the local community, making a significant influence off the field as well.

“Everybody at Newcastle United would like to thank Sean for his outstanding contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”
