The city centre remained crowded with consumers, who flocked to department stores such as Cole Brothers, Cockayne’s, and Walsh’s.
There was a buzz in Sheffield, never more so than when one of the decade’s defining characters, the world’s greatest footballer, Pele, visited.
However, there was another side to the 1970s, when Britain was hit by an economic storm, with hyperinflation, strikes, and power outages making life difficult for many.
In Sheffield, the once-mighty steel industry began its decline, which would accelerate drastically in the 1980s.

The launch of the Fiesta, Europe’s largest nightclub at the time; the glory days of Millhouses Lido, which drew swimmers from all over; and waterskiing at Crookes Valley Park are all included.
