Mohamed Konate, a free agency midfielder, is reportedly being courted by Sheffield Wednesday for a contract.
Following his preseason trial period with the team, Wednesday is reportedly now in negotiations to sign Konate.
Konate, who left Portuguese club Covilha earlier this summer following a brief stay during which he was instrumental in his team’s near escape from relegation from the third division, is currently a free agent.
Two of the Owls’ three transfer embargoes have been lifted after they paid the salaries of its staff and players for May and June and settled their debt to HMRC, but they are still subject to one for unpaid bills from other teams. Additionally, they were given a three-window ban on paying transfer fees, which would not apply to Konate.
With Leicester City and Middlesbrough, Wednesday is one of just three Championship teams who have not yet made a signing this summer. However, this might change if they choose to offer Konate a contract.
A potential move for Mohamed Konate is being discussed by Sheffield Wednesday.
Despite playing just 10 games for Covilha last season, when he scored two goals and was sent off twice, Konate’s performances in Portugal’s third level seem to have caught Wednesday’s
curiosity. After leaving Covilha, the 20-year-old has been on trial with the Owls for the past several weeks. Earlier this month, he accompanied the team to their training camp at St George’s Park, but on Friday, he was a member of the young team that fell 3-1 to Stocksbridge Park Steelers.
Though it is unclear how that would impact any possible deal, it seems that Konate impressed during his trial period with Wednesday. According to The Star, talks are currently underway regarding whether to sign the midfielder. However, he would take up one of their Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) spots.
In recent weeks, the Owls have lost four important players: Josh Windass and Michael Smith left Hillsborough last week after their contracts were mutually terminated, Anthony Musaba signed for Turkish club Samsunspor for £800,000, and fellow winger Djeidi Gassama joined Rangers for £2.2 million.
Due to those departures, Wednesday has an extremely thin squad ahead of the upcoming season, which starts in less than three weeks. Konate’s arrival would be a welcome boost, but it’s unclear who will decide whether to offer manager Danny Rohl a contract given the recent uncertainty surrounding his future following the failure of the club’s proposed takeover.
As the new season draws near, Sheffield Wednesday is in dire need of additions.
Wednesday supporters may naturally be dubious about Konate’s ability to advance to the Championship given that he played in the Portuguese third division the previous season, but it will be challenging for them to draw in players of a higher caliber this summer given their off-field problems under owner Dejphon Chansiri, which are not going away.
