Staff at city’s two universities vote to strike.

Staff at Sheffield’s two universities voted to go on strike in a disagreement over job losses, working conditions, and workloads, according to the union.

The University and College Union (UCU) stated that no dates have been established for the action by its members at Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield.

A spokeswoman at Sheffield Hallam University stated that the university took “tough decisions” to avoid compulsory redundancies, and that approximately 500 employees left through voluntary severance in 2024.

The University of Sheffield said it would “stand by its commitment” to not make any compulsory redundancies this year, but it was examining academic structures and personnel numbers in some areas.

Sheffield Hallam University recently defended its choice to spend £140 million on a new campus in the city, in addition to investing in a new campus in London. Staff went on strike in March after management delayed a 2.7% salary increase by seven months, with no back pay.
