Turriff Academy slammed by inspectors as ‘staff don’t treat pupils with respect’.

Education Scotland inspectors visited the Aberdeenshire senior school and rated it “weak” in two areas.

Turriff Academy’s acting head teacher has vowed to turn things around following a critical inspection report.

Education Scotland inspectors visited the facility on Victoria Terrace in March. The school’s leadership was labelled “weak,” and the academy received the lowest rating for “ensuring wellbeing, equality, and inclusion.”

However, its learning, teaching, and evaluation, as well as its ability to increase attainment and achievement, were deemed “satisfactory”.

What did inspectors say was ‘weak’ about Turriff Academy?

Turriff Academy students were assessed to be “welcoming, confident, and proud of their achievements” by inspectors.

However, the research stated that a “significant” proportion of kids felt their peers and teachers did not treat them “fairly or with respect.”

Colleague Anne Stirling also stated that the school and community had “absolutely taken on board” the inspection report’s findings.

She continued, “It is not always easy to accept some of the statements that have been expressed.

“However, the possibility to change a potentially unfavourable situation into some very obvious positives is plain.

“It’s been challenging, but that challenge has been taken head-on and Emma Jane is very enthusiastic and keen to move forward.”
