Watford went top of Football League on this day 43 years ago.
Watford won the Football League title 43 years ago today, capping off a remarkable football journey.
The Hornets had been at the bottom of Division Four just seven years before, but Graham Taylor and Elton John led the club on an incredible journey that saw them promoted to the top division of English football for the first time in 1982.
Watford quickly made the rest of Division One sit up and take notice, with wins over Everton, Southampton, and Swansea City putting them among the early pacesetters when West Bromwich Albion came to Vicarage Road on Saturday, September 11, 1982.
A crowd of 17,639 watched as Luther Blissett scored twice, either side of a Les Taylor goal, to secure a 3-0 victory, propelling Taylor’s team to the league’s top spot for the first and only time.
The Hornets were also at the top on August 31, but league standings were not published or recognised until three matches had been played.
