West Yorkshire derby an ‘absolute bear pit’ – Glennon.
Matt Glennon, a former Huddersfield Town custodian, recalled his West Yorkshire derby versus Bradford City as “an absolute bear pit”.
Glennon has played for both Huddersfield Town and Bradford City, but he only appeared in the derby while with Town.
“I can still taste [Dean] Windass’ elbow across my chops now from that game,” Glennon told BBC Radio Leeds of Town’s 1-0 League One win against City at Valley Parade in 2006.
“It’s a proper derby where you can [feel] the hairs on the back of your neck when the crowd starts singing [and] you just know that everybody wants those three points.”
Glennon also appeared in the return match, which Town won 2-0 to complete the West Yorkshire derby double in 2006-07.
That season was the last time Huddersfield and Bradford played a league rivalry, so Glennon gave BBC Radio Leeds a preview of what to expect this Saturday.
“It is all activity. It was saves, shoots, tackles, elbows, stamping, and it was a complete nightmare,” he said.
“That’s exactly what you want and I’m expecting it to be the same with a massive crowd [this] weekend.” “I’m hoping it’s going to be really tasty.”
Glennon, like many Terriers and Bantams fans, hopes for the gritty, aggressive West Yorkshire derby that has been seen in the past, but he cannot predict what will happen this Saturday. “People in Huddersfield seem frightened about it.
I believe this is because Bradford has begun so well, as do promoted clubs.”It will be ‘right, this has been a while, who’s taking home the spoils?'” I expect Huddersfield to achieve it, and I expect them to win the game, but it won’t be easy.”
