Sheffield retro: 24 nostalgic photos showing 60s and 70s life in city’s industrial heartland.

Sheffield has altered dramatically between the 1960s and 1970s.

But if one area of the city has changed more dramatically than any other, it is undoubtedly the ancient industrial heartland.

This throwback photo gallery highlights the end of a great era for Brightside and Attercliffe.

The interesting photographs depict a bustling Sheffield suburb where heavy industry supports a vibrant community.
Pubs, schools, and businesses can be found among the veil of smoke emitted by the numerous manufacturers, many of which have since disappeared.

Children may be seen playing on the streets, a historic department store is photographed just before it shutters for good, and two of Sheffield’s most iconic buildings stand proudly on the skyline, which has changed dramatically since these images were taken.

A new age is on the way for the town, with the hope that a vast waterfront housing development would revitalise its economy.

However, this walk down memory lane underlines the challenges of reconstructing a community in one of Sheffield’s most affected areas by the city’s industrial decline.

Do these nostalgic photographs of the area evoke any memories for you? Did you visit any of the pubs, shops, or schools shown?
