Illegal ‘plywood homes’ torn down in Edgware after safety fears.
A group of unauthorised outbuildings used as makeshift dwellings in Edgware has been demolished after Harrow Council discovered what it described as unsafe living conditions.
The buildings were discovered behind a property on Camrose Avenue during what the council described as a regular inspection. Officers identified three sheds being hired despite major safety concerns.

Inside, the conditions were described as basic and hazardous. The buildings were constructed with materials such as plywood and cardboard, had dangerous electrical wiring and lacked suitable bathroom or toilet facilities.
Officers were particularly concerned about fire hazards and the cold, as the buildings provided little protection from the elements.
The council stated that the outbuildings continued to be used despite an Emergency Prohibition Order, leaving them with little choice but to intervene. These structures were dismantled this week.

Calvin McLean, the Director of Environment, stated, “No one should ever live like this. What our officers discovered was horrible, and we are grateful that cops acted quickly to put an end to the usage of these illegal outbuildings.
We will continue to take action against anyone putting lives at danger. Residents are asked to report any suspected illegal or dangerous lodging so that the Council can act swiftly.”
