Crowborough Army Camp: Sussex Weald MP says Chair of Home Affairs Committee is requesting information after call for formal inquiry
Crowborough Army Camp: Sussex Weald MP says Chair of Home Affairs Committee is requesting information after call for formal inquiry.
The MP for Sussex Weald has claimed a ‘very positive result’ after asking the Home Affairs Select Committee to launch a formal investigation into Crowborough Training Camp’s acquisition.
Conservative Nusrat Ghani announced on Thursday, March 26, that she has heard back from Dame Karen Bradley MP, Chair of the Home Affairs Committee.
Ms Ghani shared the letter on her Facebook page, writing, “We just want accurate and consistent answers to what happened in Crowborough, how long we can expect the Home Office to use the site, and what resources we can secure to help Crowborough and the surrounding areas.”
In January of this year, the Home Office stated that it has begun to relocate asylum seekers to the former military base Crowborough training camp as part of a campaign to ‘stop the use of pricey hotels’. The Home Office stated that the location houses single adult males seeking asylum in the UK, and that the number of asylum seekers is expected to climb to more than 500.
In a letter dated Wednesday, March 25, Dame Karen stated: “In light of the Government’s renewed emphasis on large sites to accommodate asylum seekers, I have written to the relevant local authorities and accommodation providers to request additional information about the use of new large sites in East Sussex and Inverness as asylum accommodation.”Once the Committee has received responses to these letters, we will decide what further scrutiny to undertake on this issue.”
Ms Ghani described the level of investigation as ‘appropriate’, saying: “It is a great positive result to have the heavyweight Home Affairs Select Committee engaged in what has transpired in Crowborough.”
The Home Office first declared in October 2025 that the Crowborough Army Camp site would be used to host asylum seekers. Since then, the project has been heavily criticised by local citizens and lawmakers.
