Crystal Palace submit CAS appeal over Europa League demotion with Nottingham Forest request

With Nottingham Forest’s request, Crystal Palace files a CAS appeal against their Europa League demotion.

Crystal Palace has appealed their demotion from the Europa League to the Conference League to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Palace has filed an appeal against UEFA, Lyon, and Nottingham Forest after being fined for violating the multi-club ownership regulations earlier this month.

The decision is a result of John Textor, owner of Eagle Football Holdings, having stakes in both French team Lyon and Crystal Palace, both of which made it to the Europa League the previous season.

According to a statement from CAS, the appeal, which was submitted on July 21, 2025, aims to overturn the UEFA Club Financial Control Body’s ruling that Crystal Palace and OL violated the rules governing multi-club ownership and that Crystal Palace was promoted to the UEFA Conference League 2025–2026.

“With Nottingham Forest’s admission to the UEFA Europa League 2025–2026 denied, Crystal Palace also requests readmission in conjunction with the annulment.

“In the alternative, Crystal Palace requests readmission to the UEFA Europa League 2025/2026 with OL’s admission rejected.”

According to UEFA regulations, clubs that are controlled by the same person or organization to a certain extent are not permitted to participate in the same European championship during the same season.

UEFA rejected Palace’s argument that Textor, who has since consented to sell Woody Johnson, the owner of the New York Jets, his 43% ownership stake in the team, lacked decisive influence at Selhurst Park.

After the decision, Palace’s spot in the Europa League was taken by Nottingham Forest, who initially qualified for the Conference League, while Lyon retained their spot because of their higher league finish.

The Eagles finished 11th in the Premier League, and they finished sixth in Ligue 1.

In a July 11 statement, Palace claimed they were “extremely dismayed” by UEFA’s ruling and that, in compliance with UEFA Statutes, they have now chosen to appeal it.

With the Europa League group stage starting on September 24, a decision regarding Palace’s appeal is anticipated by August 11 at the latest.
