West Brom defender Heggem set for £10m Bologna move.

West Brom have accepted a bid of around £10 million from Italian side Bologna for defender Tobjorn Heggem. Heggem, 26, did not play in the Carabao Cup loss to Derby County on Tuesday.

The Norwegian international joined the Baggies from Swedish club IF Brommapojkarna last summer and appeared in all Championship games in 2024-25. A sell-on clause has been included in the agreement. Heggem has seven caps for Norway after making his debut in 2024.

Heggem departure a ‘huge loss’ to Albion – Analysis

Steve Hermon, a BBC WM West Bromwich Albion reporter: The sale of Torbjorn Heggem is clearly a significant loss for Albion’s defence, but it is the best example yet of the recruitment model implemented by the club’s owners, Bilkul, and led by Sporting Director Andrew Nestor.

Outside of the club, little was known about the Norwegian defender when he arrived from Swedish top-flight club IF Brommpojkarna in June 2024. He cost less than £600,000, and 13 months later, Heggem is a Norway international who will play in Serie A after signing a deal worth around £10 million.

He was deservedly named the Baggies’ player of the season after appearing in all but one of their Championship games in the 2024-25 season, and he added to his credentials with a solid performance for his national team in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Italy in the summer, which may have alerted Bologna to his abilities, though he was already on their radar.

Much has been written about Albion’s financial constraints, and chairman Shilen Patel reiterated in an open letter in June that the’realities of profit and sustainability’ had not changed and warned fans to be ‘prepared for the departure of players.’

The large profit on Heggem will go a long way towards alleviating that situation, and they will hopefully avoid having to sell other players such as Tom Fellows and Isaac Price during this transfer window.

Nat Phillips and George Campbell were signed this summer and will most likely be Albion’s first-choice pairing in the centre of defence for the lunchtime trip to Wrexham.

Academy product Caleb Taylor’s performance in the Carabao Cup first round against Derby in midweek helped his chances of starting, but it leaves Ryan Mason a little light in defence.

Hopefully, Patel and Nestor have another ‘well-vetted talent’ up their sleeve before the end of the month.
