Study says West Virginia is least fun state, but it didn’t take these factors into account.
Clarksburg, West Virginia (WBOY) — A study published on Tuesday claimed that West Virginia is the least enjoyable state in America, but outdoor enthusiasts may disagree with the methodology.
WalletHub’s ranking used 26 metrics to assign a score for “Nightlife” and one for “Entertainment and Recreation,” and then ranked each state based on its total combined score.
West Virginia ranked 50th in Entertainment and Recreation and 40th in Nightlife, putting the Mountain State in 50th overall—the least fun.
However, the study did not account for certain types of entertainment that West Virginia is known for.
The ranking took into account metrics such as the number of restaurants, performing arts theatres, fitness centres, and other entertainment establishments per capita, as well as personal recreation expenditures per capita.
However, in a state where free outdoor recreation is the primary draw for tourists, those metrics do not highlight West Virginia’s strengths.

According to the ranking, West Virginia has the third lowest personal expenditures on recreation services per capita, but this does not take into account the fact that West Virginia is one of the few states with free state parks.
Seeing lights in the woods? Although West Virginia ranks 49th in terms of fitness centres per capita, it boasts thousands of miles of hiking and biking trails.
West Virginia has 36 state parks, 1.1 million acres of federal land (national forests, parks, and preserves open for outdoor recreation), and year-round adventure opportunities such as whitewater rafting and skiing.
